Twitter Trolls Facebook’s New Name

Mark Zuckerberg’s statement that Facebook would be changed to ‘Meta,’ a change that generated a slew of memes, was mocked on Twitter.

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has recently revealed on October 28 that the company would be renamed Meta. The name change sparked a flurry of jokes and postings throughout the internet, focusing not just on the company’s new name, but also on the fact that “Meta” is a clear gaming reference.

Twitter, a competitor social media platform, decided to join in the fun, foreshadowing a possible redesign of their own. Twitter’s official account, simply @Twitter, mocked Facebook by tweeting a joke about the company’s renaming.

Just after Facebook announced their major branding shift, the company tweeted, “BIG NEWS lol jk still Twitter.” Given that the two businesses have been the largest social media platforms, and competitors, since each emerged in the mid-2000s, Twitter’s criticism of Facebook’s name change is appropriate.

The CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey also commented on his personal account, pointing out the actual definition of the term “meta.”

After the news, Twitter wasn’t the only company to criticize Facebook. A few other major corporations joined in on the “Meta” memes, including Wendy’s, which faked a renaming to simply “Meat.” Wendy’s took the joke one step further and changed their Twitter handle to Meat.

Along with the name change, users had a lot of fun photoshopping Zuckerberg’s presentation, substituting the new Meta logo with imaginary malevolent organizations like Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corporation.
