Tributes Pour In For Steffi Gregg

Leon Bailey, a Reggae Boy, joined Raheem Sterling in dedicating one of his first goals for Aston Villa to Stephanie ‘Steffie’ Gregg, a late friend.

Bailey made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Everton, sending in a corner kick that defender Lucas Digne assisted in putting into his own net.

Ding Dong, a dancehall star, shared a video of the second goal with audio from his 2021 song Yo Pull Up. “Big Goals, Leon Bailey,” says the narrator. “Yo Pul-up,” he wrote alongside fire emojis in the caption.

Bailey, a Dancehall fan, responded with some of the song’s lyrics: “Nuh mek me guh off like,” followed by grenade emojis.

Kyle Butler, Bailey’s brother and a dancehall music producer, also praised Bailey on Twitter, writing, “Once a dream- him do it for all a we.”

Bailey’s post-goal celebrations were made even more profound for Jamaicans when he removed his jersey to reveal his undershirt, which read “FOREVER LOVE STEFFI GREGG.”

A well-known Jamaican socialite and Twitch streamer Gregg died in late August after contracting COVID-19 and developing complications. Gary Gregg, a former race car driver, was her father. She was also the niece of dancehall producer Rvssian and the sister of racer car driver Kyle ‘Speedy’ Gregg.

Bailey captioned a photo of the tribute, “That One Was For You!” on Instagram. I still think about you on a daily basis. Sis, I’ll always love you!”

Aston Villa won their second game of the season, but Leon Bailey is expected to miss a game or two after leaving the game early due to injury.

Raheem Sterling, a Jamaican footballer, paid tribute to Gregg earlier this month when he scored for England in their 4-0 thrashing of Hungary at the Puskas Arena.
