The Twitch Purple Screen Of Death

Twitch Streamers and Former Staff Members are accusing the platform itself of being greedy after they recently implemented the “Purple Screen of Death” in Twitch embeds.

2020 was certainly the successful period of Twitch after gathering 1 trillion minutes watched, 26.5 average daily viewers and over 6 million content creators streaming each month and because of that, the platform has been experiencing more traffic than it ever has before.

Twitch has been making changes to their general operation and terms of service because of its increase in traffic. Not everyone is in favor of the changes.

One of the changes of the platform is the adding of the ‘Purple Screen of Death’. It is a notice that pops up when you are watching Twitch embed on an external website. The notice states that if the viewer is seeing the notice and is still not in the actual site, they must ‘click here’ to get the best Twitch experience.

The platform also explained that users with ad-block will most likely receive the notice and asked it’s users to turn it off because based on twitch, any third-party tools can affect the platform’s performance.

The pop-up is 30-seconds long and many users cannot skip it and that poses a problem for many users who are watching significant parts of the stream. Many users are getting frustrated by it. Ben Goldhaber posted a thread on Twitter explaining that the anti adblock message can result in overriding any big events and ‘moments’ and also disrupt the ‘hype’ moments of any stream because the pop-up message will last more than 30 seconds and will also pop up every 15 minutes.

Many are complaining about the purple screen of death. Many users of the platform find it as a problem. Even Esports insider Rod Breslau better known as Slasher made a comment and said that Twitch added the purple screen of death because of their ‘pure’ greed.

The issue has quickly escalated and many users of the platform are not happy about it. Also former employees are speaking out on the issue and the platform is now facing more anger.

Many are still hoping that Twitch will do something about it and hope that Twitch will listen this time around.
