The Streamer ‘Squid Game’ Might be Forced to Change Name

A Twitch streamer who has gone by the name ‘Squid Game’ on the platform for years now says she may be forced to change her name due to abuse and now a loss of job. Regrettably, the name is identical to Netflix’s most popular show of all time.

Squid Game is a Korean thriller that premiered on Netflix in 2021 and rapidly became a blockbuster hit, surpassing audience records. People dressed up as various characters from the program took over Halloween 2021. However, for one unfortunate content creator, the name of their program is identical to their Twitch account, where they are a partnered streamer.

SquidGame, whose real name is Lydia, has over 40,000 Instagram followers and is a Yogscast member. Lydia’s Instagram account, also known as ‘SquidGame,’ was suspended in October after it was widely reported, likely by Netflix program fans.

SquidGame said on November 2 that the Netflix show’s name controversy was forcing her to miss out on job chances. SquidGame tweeted, “Looks like I might have to change my handle after all. I’ve lost 2 amazing presenting opportunities because people don’t want to hire me with my ‘squid game’ handle.”

Despite the fact that her Instagram account has been restored, and Twitch appears to have no issues with her channel’s username, the misunderstanding is bound to persist. She explained; “First I get sent abuse, then I get banned, now I’m losing out on work.”

Other content creators, such as streamer Steven ‘Destiny’ Bonnell and the Bungie video game franchise ‘Destiny,’ have names that are similar to other IPs. However, considering the show’s popularity, Squid Game’s unlikely matching name is remarkably particular, and will undoubtedly cause misunderstanding in the future.

On the other hand, the name may have some minor advantages, such as users finding Squid Games’s Twitch or YouTube content and sticking around. Squid Game has even joined in on the memes, dressing up as characters from the show on her YouTube channel.
