Sombra Skin Based on AOC’s Met Gala Dress

The New York Excelsior, a professional Overwatch League club, has come up with a unique skin design for Sombra: a new “Hack the Rich” version of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s Met Gala gown.

Overwatch skin ideas are usually sparked by fans or odd flashes of creativity. This one is unique on both counts; it’s a concept shared on the internet by a real OWL team, and the source of inspiration is very specific.

The Met Gala was full of fascinating outfits, including one worn by Kim Kardashian that has been compared to Roze Operator from Call of Duty: Warzone. NYXL, on the other hand, took inspiration from Congresswoman AOC.

Her Met Gala dress was controversial in and of itself, but it somehow matches Sombra’s hacking, saboteur vibe.

As seen from AOC’s tweet, she was dressed in a white gown with red paint splattered across the back that read “tax the rich.”, along with her caption that read: “The medium is the message” (a reference to Marshall McLuhan’s work). The message appears to be a disruption of the bourgeoisie, given the text and context.

Well, that all vibes with Sombra, whose in-game lore paints her as a hacker committed to helping the poor via digital espionage to disrupt and unseat the powerful.

While the Overwatch’s hacker usually wears pants, placing her in a dress with anti-elite rhetoric doesn’t seem out of place, especially with the little change NYXL made.

The phrase “hack the rich” is written in big letters on the Sombra version of AOC’s clothing. After all, she is linked to Talon and Los Muertos, so stealing from the wealthy is more in her wheelhouse than hoping for higher tax brackets.

Although it’s unlikely that the skin would ever be used in Overwatch, the concept is entertaining. Although some people were irritated by the NYXL tweet, others found it amusing, and others were simply off speculating how a “democratic socialist Sombra” could fit into the Overwatch 2 universe.
