SK Gaming Announces Project Avarosa

SK Gaming has recently revealed Project Avarosa which was a League of Legends team comprised entirely of female and non-binary players.

A League of Legends team made up of female and non-binary players will be supported and trained as part of the effort with the Esports organization located in Germany Project Avarosa has been announced by SK Gaming. According to SK Gaming’s press release regarding Project Avarosa, the team worked for two years to discover the most authentic method to offer support and services to women and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

For the past two decades, SK Gaming has been regarded as a leader in women’s esports. In the early 2000s, their women’s CS:GO team, SK Ladies, was particularly successful. With the unveiling of Project Avarosa, the Köln-based organization appears to be trying to build on that tradition. Avarosa’s mission is to scout and promote a League of Legends team consisting of female and non-binary players, according to the project’s website. Players admitted into the program would attend “up to” five boot camps between October and December 2021 to receive instruction. They’ll also get access to full usage of SK Gaming’s Köln facilities.

Candidates for Project Avarosa must be at least 16 years old, have a Platinum 2 or higher League of Legends level, identify as female or non-binary, and reside in Europe, preferably Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.

However, none of the released materials relating to Project Avarosa state exactly what the project’s purpose is. The first benefit listed in the section regarding the program’s advantages is “casting and promotion of an amateur team.” However, there is no more explanation of what this means in practice.

The official press release from SK Gaming also points to a lack of clear vision for Project Avarosa. They stated; “We are not making bold promises that we will change esports overnight, or that by next year we will have a mixed team play in the LEC, but we do want to contribute and be part of the change. We want to level the playing field as much as possible and give a diverse roster of people the chance to thrive in competitive gaming. In the meantime, we welcome the community’s feedback.”

SK Gaming also released a video starring Troubleinc alongside the press release, but it does not shine any more light on what Project Avarosa is all about.
