New PogChamp Emote Plan

Back on January 6th, Twitch announced that they will be removing the PogChamp emote on twitch chat after the face of the emote Ryan Gutierrez aka Gootecks was involved in a controversy where he encouraged violence. Twitch released a statement on January 6th stating; “We’ve made the decision to remove the PogChamp emote following statements from the face of the emote encouraging further violence after what took place in the Capitol today.”

Soon after, the community found a solution as the pogchamp emote held an important place in Twitch culture. Many ideas started pouring in such as using some late content creators such as Etika. The suggestion of streamer Day9 gained the most attention as he stated on twitter; “Yo @Twitch suggestion for PogChamp: create a database of streamers and/or general faces. Whenever someone types PogChamp, display one of those faces at random. Would give a really nice crowd feel to a chat spamming PogChamp and allow the meaning to be tied to all of us instead.”

It quickly gained support from other popular streamers such as Pokimane and Greekgodx. Twitch has decided to implement it as they have retweeted day9’s tweet and stated; “You know what? In the spirit of figuring out 2021 together, let’s just roll with it for now! Get ready for a new PogChamp every 24 hours, starting today.”
